Friends of Bedale Community Library
Susan Perkins, Chair of FoBCL, writes.
Our events since the launch in March have all involved coffee, cakes and biscuits – and of course, books.
Patrick Brompton Community Events Committee hold a monthly coffee morning, and they generously offered to give the Library the proceedings from that held on 27 May. So people came and drank tea or coffee, chatted and ate delicious cakes, scones and biscuits, probably bought some to take home. We provided publicity material and raffle prizes, and had a stall from which we sold books, talked to people about the Library and signed up a few more Friends. Everything else, including the baking, was done by the Events Committee, and the Library benefited from around £150. We are very grateful for this extremely Friendly idea.
People in Newton-le-Willows do something similar, and a date has been set for a FoBCL coffee morning there: it will be held between 10am and 12 noon on Saturday 19 August. Can you and your village or community do something Friendly along these lines? Get in touch with the Friends via firstname.lastname@example.org and we will help with publicity, bring the bookstall and provide the raffle prizes.
On Thursday 8 June, we held a coffee morning in the Library, not to raise funds but to enable Volunteers to meet each other and to congratulate them on their work. More than 30 people came – some were Volunteers, some Friends and some borrowers who came in because the door was open.
FoBCL now has another Trustee, Anne Makepeace, who will help us to make the best use not only of withdrawn library stock but also of the books that people generously donate.
A coffee morning for Friends and Volunteers will be held in the Library on Thursday, 6 July 10 am — 12 noon.
