Friends of Bedale Community Library Susan Perkins, Chair of FoBCL, writes. Our events since the launch in March have all involved coffee, cakes and biscuits – and of course, books. Coffee, anyone? Bedale Community Library (BCL) came into being on 1st April 2017, so here we are 100 days down the road and still going strong.  When the Board of Trustees was formed in order to bring BCL into being there were two main concerns.. A free Introduction to Computing course will be held on 21 June between 9,30 am — 11.30 am in the Conference Room at Bedale Hall. The course is being organised as part as the Festival of Learning week and will be run by LIbrary Volunteer Norman Hazlewood. Sign up in the library. All welcome, including beginners. Citizens’ Advice clinic at the library every Tuesday. Free, confidential and impartial advice on benefits, money, housing and employment is offered at the library with Martin (pictured) every Tuesday from 10am—12.30pm.

After the success of the launch of the Friends group, we handed over a cheque for £2000 to BCL at the end of March. A few days later, to show Maggie and Nathalie our appreciation, a small group of HLIS volunteers, Friends and library users presented them with gift vouchers, flowers, chocolates and a bottle of wine each. New stock has arrived for the secondhand book stall. This month we are focussing on Holiday Reading and Thrillers. All proceeds will go to Bedale Community Library. Please make a cash donation as you like. Every Tuesday in May between 10,30am and 12noon, you can drop in to the Library for free IT support. Laura van den Heuvel, our Dutch student volunteer, is there to help. Whether you want to set up an email address, organise your photos on your iPad or learn how to Skype your friends and relatives, you will benefit from Laura's IT experience and expertise. Alternatively, one-to-one IT sessions with Laura can be booked at the Library until 24 June.

And the sun shone. Mike Evitt, Trustee of Bedale Community Library, writes:  We had a very good car boot sale on Easter Saturday with over 170 sellers in the park. I am grateful to the 14 volunteers who gave up their Saturday morning to help. Although it was a bright day, it was cold. Almost forty volunteers are in the process of being trained with the help of Victoria Sauron, Laura Dinning and Ruth Partington of NYCC Library Services. They now know their RFID machines from their Soprano systems.
